Safe Internet Campaign surpasses 2025 target

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 — The Safe Internet Campaign organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has surpassed the target of 8,000 schools and educational institutions set for this year, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

As of Thursday (November 20), it had conducted the campaign at 8,216 schools and educational institutions.

“Today alone, the Safe Internet Campaign is being held in 58 schools, which for me is important for us to enhance. There are over 10,000 primary and secondary schools nationwide, and these are the main targets of the Safe Internet Campaign.

“… because we found that apart from the problem of cyberbullying, we must also tackle issues like scams, paedophilia and sexual crimes against children,” he told the press after officiating at the closing ceremony of the Lembah Pantai Indian Community Cyber Fraud Awareness Seminar today.

Fahmi added that the ministry is confident that the campaign will be carried out in every school nationwide by the first quarter of next year.

The Safe Internet Campaign aims to educate users, especially students, on safe and responsible Internet use, to increase digital literacy and create a more positive online environment.

It focuses on issues like cyberbullying, online scams, digital gambling and child sexual abuse content.

Meanwhile, the minister also reminded parents to play a role in discouraging children aged below 16 from using social media.

He hopes that social media platform operators will comply with the government’s decision to prohibit children aged below 16 from having social media accounts.
