Media Selangor workshop exposes uni students to AI’s potential

SHAH ALAM, Nov 12 — The “Social Media Workshop: Maximising Social Media — Trends, Safety and Ethical Use” event at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang yesterday, organised by Media Selangor, exposed participants about ethical digital platform use and positive perspectives to the use of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI).

UPM Bachelor of Communication student Navaneswaran said the workshop expanded his understanding about AI’s potential in the communications world.

“This programme opened my mind as a communications student. I got many new ideas about how media can be used to help the community. It spread awareness about the ethical use of technology,” he said when met at the event yesterday.

He said many view AI as a threat, but the session by experienced speakers painted a more accurate picture.

“Many think AI is scary, but this programme gave me knowledge that will help me educate the community and my friends so they are not afraid to use that technology,” Navaneswaran said, while praising the speaker as friendly.

Another UPM student, Nur Aireen Qistina, said the workshop gave participants comprehensive exposure to the link between AI technology and the media industry.

“I gained deeper knowledge about the media, search engines, AI use in the economy, and how it contributes to the industry,” said the UPM Bachelor of Communication student.

She said the workshop also helped her understand new jobs coming up in media and communications thanks to technological advancement.

“It gave me a clear picture about my future career and opportunities I could explore, especially with organisations like Media Selangor,” Aireen said.

Other than a learning session, interactive activities throughout the programme brought students closer.

“The activities were fun. It wasn’t just about theory, but helped us interact, share our views, and network,” Aireen said.

With sharing sessions by industry experts, the “Social Media Workshop: Maximising Social Media — Trends, Safety and Ethical Use” is seen to have been successful  in helping participants acclimate to changes in the media landscape that are increasingly driven by technology and AI.
