SHAH ALAM, Oct 20 — The spirit of unity must continue to be nurtured and strengthened within Malaysia’s multicultural society, said the state executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman.
He emphasised the importance of celebrating all festivals regardless of race or religion, as it reflects the harmony and uniqueness of the Malaysian people.
“We celebrate all festivals — this is the uniqueness of Selangor and Malaysia as a multiracial nation. For instance, at today’s Deepavali Open House, I invited everyone, including people from both the government and Opposition blocs.
"We should not politicise such matters. Instead, we must remain united. Although we may stand on different platforms, we are all Malaysians who love peace and harmony,” he said during the event at the EXCO Residential Complex in Section 7, Shah Alam today.
Interestingly, the event was attended by about 800 guests from diverse political backgrounds, including representatives from both the government and Opposition, friends, and community leaders, showcasing the spirit of togetherness that transcends political differences.

Papparaidu also advised the public to reduce the use of firecrackers during the Deepavali celebration and instead spend more time visiting friends and neighbours to strengthen inter-community bonds.
“Last night, the fireworks were really loud, I could not sleep. So, if possible, let us cut down on firecrackers and spend more time visiting our friends and neighbours,” he said, expressing his gratitude to all who attended.
Earlier, the event — held in a lively and festive atmosphere — featured traditional Indian music performances and a variety of cultural dishes, reflecting the diversity that forms the strength of the nation.
