Fines proposed for men misusing women’s parking bays in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — Male drivers who park in designated women’s bays in Selangor could face fines of up to RM500 under a proposal by the Selangor Women’s Assembly (Siwanis).

Delegate Too Chun Yoke said the measure, enforced via an automated system, aims to deter misuse of the bays, which are reserved to protect women drivers travelling alone.

“In addition, vehicles should be removed (wheel-clamped or towed) if repeat violations occur within an hour, with visual notifications (a red e-summons mark in the e-parking app) to inform the public.

“Each women’s parking bay should also be monitored during peak hours, with silent audits conducted, along with feedback collected from users of these spaces,” said Too, who holds the role of state executive councillor for local government.

She was responding to a supplementary question from fellow delegate Adlina Abdul Alim, who serves as Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman woman, during the programme at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.

Adlina’s question concerned the state government's proactive measures to improve the ‘Single Women Drivers’ initiative and ensure their rights are not infringed upon by other vehicle owners once parking facilities are privatised in the future.

The third edition of Siwanis brought together 56 women delegates from across Selangor, as well as invited representatives from other states, making it an inclusive and high-impact women’s leadership platform.

Using a simulated State Legislative Assembly format, the programme aims to nurture women’s leadership talent, strengthen policy knowledge, and train participants to be leaders at both state and national level.

Too added that to strengthen monitoring, the installation of 1,800 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras with number plate recognition technology and artificial intelligence (AI) was also recommended, to detect violations in real time and subsequently issue automatic summonses or towing notices.
