Selangor sees 13.3 pct drop in crime thanks to targeted police strategy

SHAH ALAM, July 29 — Selangor saw a marked decrease of 13.3 per cent in crime last year from 2023, as a result of comprehensive strategies undertaken by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in crime hotspots.

Former state police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said a phased plan to combat crime, focused on increased patrols, targeted control in high-risk areas, and active community engagement, has had a significant positive impact on public safety.

“All these approaches have helped in creating a more peaceful environment,” he said during the Agenda Awani programme yesterday.

According to Hussein, the effectiveness of patrols was further enhanced through the deployment of PDRM’s Motorcycle Unit and Mobile Patrol Vehicle Unit at high-risk locations, identified through data analysis and community feedback.

“We consistently update our patrol strategy based on current situations, including monitoring during peak hours and identifying new hotspots.”

Placing officers at schools, houses of worship, and public areas has helped improve safety, while strengthening community ties.

Hussein also stressed the importance of maintaining motivation among personnel, supported by regular sector rotations and recognition for outstanding performance.

Community-friendly programmes such as district-based Meet-the-People Days and the use of the Voluntary Smart Patrol app have proven effective in bringing the police closer to the people.

He said this comprehensive approach not only helps lower the crime rate but boosts public confidence and a sense of safety among residents.

Hussein was named Selangor police chief in February 2023, before being named Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director on July 21.
