MBDK rejects proposal for columbarium near Klang mosque

KLANG, June 29 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) has rejected a proposal to build a four-storey columbarium complex for the storage of cremated ashes next to Masjid Kampung Raja Uda in Port Klang.

Klang Mayor Dato' Abd Hamid Hussain said the decision was made unanimously during a One Stop Centre (OSC) committee meeting on Thursday (June 26), taking into account technical concerns and objections from local residents.

“However, the developer may appeal to the State Town and Country Planning Department within 30 days.

“If they are still dissatisfied with the decision by the Appeals Board, they may bring the matter to court,” he said after officiating the Sentosa constituency Clean and Green programme today.

Abd Hamid noted that MBDK had carried out the proper procedures and due process in considering the developer’s application before reaching a final decision.

On June 6, Bernama reported that residents around Kampung Raja Uda had protested the proposed construction of the funeral management complex on privately owned land measuring one hectare, located next to Masjid Kampung Raja Uda, which is also within the village area.

The village, which has about 5,000 residents, saw most of them disagreeing with the proposed development. Over 300 online objection notices have been submitted to MBDK since June 4.

As a result, Port Klang state assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri represented the residents during a public hearing session chaired by Klang Deputy Mayor Mohd Zary Affendi Mohd Arif, which took place on June 19 and brought together both the developer and the villagers.
