Cambodia bans imports of vegetables, fruits from Thailand

PHNOM PENH, June 17 — Cambodia has banned the imports of vegetables and fruits from Thailand, said its immigration chief.

"We have prohibited the imports of vegetables and fruits from Thailand at all border crossings, starting from this morning," the General Department of Immigration's director-general Police Lieutenant General Sok Veasna told Xinhua over the phone.

Cambodian and Thai soldiers briefly exchanged gunfire at a disputed border area on May 28, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

Thailand and Cambodia have contested sovereignty at various undemarcated points along their 817 km land border for over a century. This border was first mapped by France in 1907, when Cambodia was under its colonial rule.

Tension escalated in 2008 over an 11th-century Hindu temple, leading to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths, including during a week-long exchange of artillery in 2011.
