KLANG, June 1 — Volunteers today collected 1.234 tonnes of garbage along a 20km stretch of Sungai Klang from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC).

Klang Mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain said the cleanup event was made successful by 500 participants from various agencies, non-governmental bodies, fishermen’s groups, and higher learning students.

He said the programme was organised after Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj said the cleanliness in Klang, especially around Sungai Klang, must be improved.

“The choice of RSYC for the Sungai Klang cleanup was significant and right, as this is the final point (of the river) before it feeds into the Malacca Strait.

“This means any pollution and trash upstream will collect here, making this among the critical locations for cleanup and restoration,” Hamid said, when met after officiating the Sungai Klang cleanup event at RSYC here today.

He added that the three-hour event involved 30 boats and dinghies.

Hamid also said the effort will continue, with collaboration from various parties, be it on a large or small scale.

“We hope the community, especially residents along Sungai Klang, will be more responsible and throw waste where they’re supposed to; recycling if necessary,” he advised.
