SHAH ALAM, May 16 — The state government is working closely with the local authorities to ensure that factories in Selangor comply with proper pollution control systems.
State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the measure is crucial to safeguard air quality and public health, especially as the risk of haze is expected to increase following the transition to the southwest monsoon.
“Factories that fail to comply with pollution control regulations will face stern action. At the same time, the local authorities are urged to intensify awareness programmes on the dangers of air pollution,” she said.

Jamaliah added that the state government is prepared to activate the National Haze Action Plan should the Air Pollution Index (API) rise.
She advised the public to reduce outdoor activities, stay well hydrated, and seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath or severe coughing.
“Immediate steps will be taken, including banning outdoor activities for students, advising the use of face masks, and issuing precautionary alerts to the community,” Jamaliah said.
The councillor stressed that legal action will be taken against individuals or parties found conducting open burning, including uncontrolled rubbish burning.
The southwest monsoon, which began on Saturday (May 10), is expected to last until September, bringing lower rainfall across most parts of Malaysia.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, hot and dry weather during this period could increase the risk of haze if open burning is not properly controlled.
Any incidents of open burning can be reported to the Fire and Rescue Department via the 999 emergency line or to the Department of Environment through its toll-free line at 1-800-88-2727.
