SHAH ALAM, May 16 — Selangor’s strength lies not in economic figures alone but in the well-being and unity of its people, and the development of the Shah Alam Sports Complex (KSSA) embodies this vision of inclusive progress, said Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.
His Highness is confident that the complex will evolve into a vibrant social and cultural landmark, bringing communities together while enhancing the state’s long-term sustainability and liveability.
“I envision a Selangor that is more inclusive, forward-thinking, and focused on long-term sustainability, where everyone has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and prosper.
“The new KSSA is an integral part of that vision, a journey that has taken me seven years to bring to life.
“It’s more than a stadium. It’s a space for everyone, a place where people can come together to be involved, in sports, in culture, in the arts, in learning. It’s designed with the people in mind, built for the future, but steeped in the values and traditions we Selangorians hold dear.
“This is the ethos of Shah Alam. This is what we are bringing to the future, and to the world,” he said at the letter of acceptance handover ceremony for the stadium redevelopment project, held at DoubleTree by Hilton here today.
Far more than a stadium, His Highness said the KSSA is envisioned as a multi-functional civic space that weaves together sports, culture, arts and education, one rooted in heritage yet built for the future.
Tengku Amir Shah added that he does not wish to see Shah Alam become just another concrete metropolis, repeating the development patterns of global cities.
“While Shah Alam remains Selangor’s administrative and economic centre, it must also offer its people a shared, harmonious space, a city where everyone, regardless of faith, ethnicity, or background, can live joyfully together.
“I envision citizens from across Selangor, from Sungai Besar and Sekinchan in the north, to Broga and Sepang in the south, from Gombak to Pulau Ketam and Carey Island, coming together in Shah Alam.”
Tengku Amir Shah said the KSSA is set to establish a new gold standard in designing, constructing, and managing public spaces, embracing nature-based and sustainable solutions that enhance resilience and biodiversity.
The redevelopment incorporates an underground flood mitigation system with a four-hectare retention pond, forming part of the broader Section 13 Shah Alam flood mitigation master plan.
“One example of this new approach to sustainable development is tackling flood risks through the ‘sponge city’ concept.
“This involves using features such as permeable pavements, rain gardens, and constructed wetlands to slow water flow, retain excess rainwater, and reduce flooding, all while enhancing local biodiversity.
“The Botanic Wetland Park is a good example of how sponge city principles can be effectively applied to urban flood mitigation.”
Tengku Amir Shah said the KSSA draws inspiration from global landmarks like Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, the United Kingdom, and Marina Bay in Singapore, positioning the complex as a dynamic civic space that balances urban vibrancy with ecological preservation.
His Highness said the design will feature artificial wetlands, biocentric materials, closed-loop systems and native flora, further reinforcing Selangor’s commitment to sustainable, resilient city-building.
