Sultan Sharafuddin urges tougher action over road crashes

SHAH ALAM, May 15 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has urged the government to take serious heed of road crash, particularly those involving heavy vehicles.

In a Facebook post on the Selangor Royal Office page, His Royal Highness said that in view of the increasing number of crashes and similar tragedies, authorities must act more firmly and quickly.

The Ruler said if any party is found guilty for fatal or injurious crashes, drivers and company owners of heavy vehicles involved should not merely be fined or imprisoned, but also have their driving licences revoked.

He said it would be a lesson to other drivers to be more cautious and pay more attention while driving.

In the same post, the Sultan and Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin condoled families of the nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who died in a road crash inTeluk Intan, Perak, on Tuesday.

Their Royal Highnesses expressed sorrow over the tragedy.

In the 8am incident, nine FRU personnel were killed and eight others injured after their truck collided with a sand lorry at the Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam junction.

Sultan Sharafuddin urged companies operating lorries, buses and heavy vehicles to conduct strict evaluations for drivers and assistants, and reminded everyone to pay serious attention to aspects that could lead to negligence, such as vehicle conditions and driver qualifications.

“His Royal Highness hopes and prays such tragic crashes will no longer occur, especially those involving the loss of innocent lives, particularly those working to maintain peace in the nation,” the post read.
