Flash floods: MB says will meet tomorrow with local authorities, agencies

SHAH ALAM, April 20 — The Selangor government has ordered that a coordination meeting be held tomorrow, involving local authorities and the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), to manage flash floods in Taman Sri Muda and Taman Sri Andalas.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said an order was also issued to state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim to overcome delays in flood mitigation projects at the local, state and federal levels.

Amirudin said the state administration is committed to ensure comprehensive solutions.

“I have seen for myself the effects of flash floods due to high rainfall this week, which have impacted residents in these two areas (Taman Sri Muda and Taman Sri Andalas).

“My office was contacted by residents who expressed their anxiousness and worry over the recurring situation, as they feel the flood mitigation projects have not been expedited.

“As a start, my political secretary Saifuddin Shafi will call a coordination meeting tomorrow with the Shah Alam City Council and Klang Royal City Council, as well as the JPS, so this issue can be solved soon,” he said in a statement today.

Amirudin added that long-term solutions must be pursued immediately, with cooperation from all parties including the federal government.

“Although nearly four years have gone by, the devastating flood of December 2021 is still in the back of every Selangor resident’s mind, and no one wants to see a recurrence,” he said.

Last week, flash floods  hit Taman Sri Muda again after heavy rain and the high-tide phenomenon.
