KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 — Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) has reprimanded civil servants from various ministries and government departments for prioritising English over Bahasa Malaysia when titling programmes, places, courses, and campaigns.
DBP director-general Hazami Jahari said reprimands were issued to organisers and management for using English in official government events mostly attended by Malaysians.
“The Federal Constitution clearly outlines the position of the Malay language for official matters in government departments, as stipulated under Article 152(6).
“Those who do not uphold and use Bahasa Melayu in government business are not showing respect for the Federal Constitution,” he said when met by Bernama today.
He cited the use of English in public displays, including the names of programmes like “Back to School” and “KL Car-Free Morning”, despite the fact the majority of participants were Malaysians.
Hazami also questioned the decision of programme organisers to use English throughout the entire programme, despite only two or three foreign participants attending.
“If we go to China, France, or Germany, for example, they will use their national language, their mother tongue. We would need to find a translator to understand what they are saying,” he said.
“Developed countries show greater respect for their languages. If we want to become a developed country, we must respect our own national language,” he added.
The National Language Act 1963/1967 underscores the importance of the national language in official matters.
The Education Act 1996 stipulates Bahasa Malaysia as the primary medium of instruction in all educational institutions under the national Education System.
