SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 — Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced that women’s participation in employment across various sectors in the state, including professional and economic fields, reached 56 per cent in 2023.
He said the figure has consistently increased by about 2 per cent annually, demonstrating the effectiveness of the state’s gender empowerment initiatives.
“(In the Selangor administration), women have been appointed for important positions such as department heads, mayors, and district officers. This reflects our ongoing commitment to gender equality, a principle we have upheld consistently since 2008,” he said.
“We initiated a gender mainstreaming programme to eliminate perceptions and stigmas surrounding women’s roles in decision-making. The response so far has been very positive,” he said.

He said after attending the Selangor Women’s Assembly at the Ideal Convention Centre today.
Also present was state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari.
Meanwhile, in a press statement, Wanita Berdaya Selangor said the event gathered around 1,000 female leaders from diverse religious, cultural, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds.
The agency emphasised the event aims to recognise people who play an active role in its women’s empowerment programmes.
“The programme serves as a platform to acknowledge the state government’s efforts and initiatives in empowering women in Selangor while inspiring contributors to continue delivering outstanding service,” it said.
