BANGKOK, Jan 10 — Thailand’s Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa is scheduled to attend the Asean Foreign Ministers' Retreat (AMM Retreat) from January 18 to January 19 in Langkawi, Kedah.
The Thai Foreign Ministry's spokesman Nikorndej Balankura said he will participate in the AMM Retreat at the invitation of Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
“The AMM Retreat is the first Asean Foreign Ministers' meeting of this year, under Malaysia’s chairmanship of Asean.
"The foreign ministers will learn about the overall direction of Malaysia’s leadership throughout 2025 under the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability," he said during a press briefing today.
Malaysia officially assumed the chairmanship of the Asean 2025 on January 1, the fifth time it has led the regional grouping since its establishment in 1967.
Over 300 key meetings and programmes are scheduled to take place across the country throughout the year.
Malaysia previously chaired Asean in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
Asean comprises 10 member countries — Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Nikorndej said Asean foreign ministers will also take the opportunity to exchange views on international and regional issues affecting the region during the retreat.
They will also follow up on the 44th and 45th AMM held in Vientiane, Laos last year.
