TOKYO, Jan 1 — Emperor Naruhito of Japan expressed hope in his New Year's address that 2025, which will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, would be a year dedicated to efforts to promote peace and to have people recognise each other's differences, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
"I believe that last year (2024) was difficult, with natural disasters that struck various parts of the world, starting with an earthquake in the Noto Peninsula at the beginning of the year and followed by typhoons and heavy rain, as well as with increased prices.
"With thoughts of people facing hardships, I am glad that many continue to work hard to help those in need and society as a whole. This year, I hope that we will treat each other with understanding and support, overcoming any difficulties that arise," His Majesty said in his address published by the Imperial Household Agency.
The Emperor added that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
"Since the end of the war, we have built the current peaceful and prosperous state through the unceasing efforts of people. However, it is a sad realisation that wars and conflicts continue to take many lives around the world.
"I feel the importance of people recognising each other's differences and working together to create a peaceful world. I hope the new year brings hope for the people of our country and around the world to move forward," His Majesty said.
Earlier in the day, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, along with their daughter Princess Aiko as well as Crown Prince Akishino and his family, welcomed Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and representatives of Parliament, who presented New Year's greetings.
In the afternoon, the Imperial Couple are expected to receive New Year's greetings from foreign ambassadors to Japan.
