PUTRAJAYA, Nov 29 — The Energy Commission (ST) has reminded the public to always be on alert as well as to prioritise safety in using electricity and gas during the current floods season affecting Malaysia.
It said the floods can cause various risks among them fallen electric poles, broken power lines, and damage to electrical and gas equipment.
"The public is also advised to keep emergency telephone numbers, for example, for police and fire stations as well as the nearest hospital and utility company, and to ensure these numbers are easily accessible in case of emergencies,” the ST said in a statement today.
It also shared several monitoring steps that can be taken to ensure electrical and gas safety, especially before, during and post floods.
If instructed to evacuate before a flood occurs, ensure the following actions are taken, including storing electrical equipment in high and safe places away from flooding and turning off the main supply switch at the electrical distribution board.
"Additionally, switch off electrical installations that are connected separately from the main switch such as the solar photovoltaic or electric fences, and close the gas cylinder or piped gas valves," the ST said.
Simultaneously, the public should also avoid passing through areas with electrical lines or installations like substations and electrical switch rooms that are submerged in water, as well as avoid touching poles or any structures that conduct electricity.
It reminded the public not to move fallen electric poles or broken power lines, but to report them immediately to the electric utility.
To ensure the safety of electric and gas usage after a flood, the main switch on the electrical distribution board and gas line valve should be turned off before cleaning work begins.
"Before switching on the main switch, ensure that electrical equipment is in a good and dry condition, and always be cautious when carrying out flood cleaning activities near electrical lines, electrical installation structures and piped gas lines."
"Avoid using electrical and gas equipment if in doubt about their safety. If in doubt about the safety of the electrical systems and piped gas, seek the services of an electrical or gas contractor registered with ST," the ST said.
