SHAH ALAM, Sept 30 — A total of 1,176kg of waste was collected by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in a programme on Saturday, held in conjunction with the Malaysia Cleanup Day.

Its Deputy Mayor Datuk Aznan Hassan said 292 volunteers participated in the cleanup activity in 10 locations across the city.

"The objective of the programme is to raise public awareness about cleanliness and the proper way to dispose of waste.

"The programme’s concept involves a large-scale integrated cleanup that includes 156 local authorities nationwide," he said.

The waste collection programme is an initiative by the Housing and Local Government Ministry, in celebration of the World Cleanup Day.

Aznan said three records are set to be created and broken in The Malaysia Book of Records, including for the highest simultaneous participation across the country.

"The other two records are for the heaviest weight of collected solid waste (household waste) and the highest number of participation locations.”

Aznan added that the results from the cleanup programme will be collected and audited by MBPJ’s Solid Waste Management and Cleansing Department.
