Monsoon transition: Selangor local councils ready to weather the storm

KLANG, Sept 26 — All local authorities in Selangor are ready to deploy their personnel and assets to high-risk areas amid the monsoon transition, which is expected to last until early November.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said parameters established during the major 2021 floods will guide the state administration to ensure swift action.

“The situation remains under control, but we will continue to improve water flow and drainage systems. Control measures, including repairs and upgrades to drainage infrastructure, are essential, particularly during the peak periods in November and December,” he said today.

Amirudin said this when met after the closing ceremony of the Malaysia Techlympics 2024 Central Zone programme, adding that heavy rain of around 119mm was the cause of the flooding in Jalan Kebun, Kota Kemuning and Taman Seri Muda yesterday.

“If the rainfall stays below 100mm, the situation remains manageable, although traffic congestion and flash floods lasting an hour or two may occur,” he said.

Amirudin added that premises that were previously used as temporary relief centres will be regazetted to accommodate flood victims if needed.

Yesterday, several areas around Kota Kemuning and Jalan Kebun in Shah Alam were hit by flash floods following heavy rain lasting several hours in the evening.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Operations Centre said it received a report of a flash flood at 2.56pm.
