GOMBAK, Aug 1 — Selangor aims to expand the Federal government’s Kasih Kanak-Kanak child protection programme across all districts as part of its concerted effort to bring down the number of child abuse and neglect cases in the state to zero.

State executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari said that for a start, the advocacy programme will be launched in selected schools to promote awareness to students and teachers.

This is crucial considering the high number of recorded physical, sexual and emotional abuse cases involving children in Selangor.

Data from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) have revealed that 1,805 such cases were reported in the state up to June alone.

“This figure is serious and must be addressed. This is why this advocacy programme is being implemented in selected schools across all districts to ensure students and teachers are more vigilant about their surroundings.

“I really hope the participation of all students and teachers will help increase public knowledge and subsequently bring down abuse and neglect cases in Selangor to zero,” she said after officiating the advocacy programme at SMK Darul Ehsan today.

Anfaal also urged all quarters to report any suspected abuse cases involving themselves or those around them by contacting Talian Kasih at 15999 or the police.

“Please remember that if you notice anything suspicious, immediately get help by contacting the cops or Talian Kasih, or seek assistance from your neighbours.

“It is my hope that we can work together to find effective solutions to help children remain vigilant and fulfil our responsibilities in ensuring their safety and protection," she said.

The half-day Kasih Kanak-Kanak programme included interactive talks by JKM, the police, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, as well as exhibitions from various government agencies.
