SHAH ALAM, June 27 — The Selangor FC Solidarity Fund grew to RM20,552.33 in less than 24 hours since its launch last night.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari took to social media to express his surprise at the public’s response to the crowdfunding campaign, initiated by the state government.

“So far, the crowdfunding campaign has reached RM20,000 in less than 24 hours since its launch.

“Donors nationwide, showing solidarity from Sabah to Johor, have contributed. This is the beauty of football. Thank you!” he said in an Instagram post today.

Yesterday, the state administration launched the fund through the Selangor Sports Council, which remains open until July 2.

The contributions will be used to assist the club in pursuing justice against the excessive punishment imposed by the Malaysian Football League (MFL).

Penalties imposed on the Red Giants included a RM100,000 fine for the team’s move to forgo the Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) on May 10.

The MFL also deducted three points from Selangor FC in the Super League, ordered them to compensate both it and JDT, and required the club to play its home league game against JDT behind closed doors.

The move drew major criticism, including a royal rebuke by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who slammed national football authorities, including the Football Association of Malaysia, for their heavy-handed decision.

He also threatened to temporarily withdraw the Red Giants from the Super League.
