Vietnam hopes UN, Asean coordinate closely, effectively Myanmar issue

NEW YORK, June 6 — Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, met with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar during her working visit to New York on June 5.

He congratulated Julie Bishop on her appointment to the role and said that, with her rich diplomatic experience and deep understanding of the region, she will successfully fulfil this role.

Vietnam News Agency reported Giang as emphasising that the top priority now is to build trust, promote ceasefire and dialogue, and facilitate humanitarian relief activities.

He added that Asean’s five-point consensus continues to be an important basis for efforts to find peaceful and sustainable solutions.

Giang hopes that the UN and Bishop, in particular, will coordinate closely and effectively with Asean and the Special Envoy of the Asean Chair on Myanmar in the principles of respect for independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs, in accordance with the will and aspirations of the Burmese people.

In turn, Bishop affirmed that she will try her best to contribute to bringing peace and stability to Myanmar. She emphasised that the UN supports Asean's leading role in this process.

Appreciating Vietnam's position in the UN and in Asean, as well as its constructive approach to the Myanmar issue in particular, Bishop hopes that Vietnam will continue to promote its role and make positive contributions to the joint efforts towards achieving a comprehensive, long-term solution to the current crisis in Myanmar.
