Ulu Tiram attack: Visitors streaming to Constable Muhamad Syafiq's residence

KUANTAN, May 18 — The house of the late Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, in Taman Seri Mahkota Jaya, Gambang, was the focus of many people, including acquaintances and members of the Royal Malaysian Police who came to pay their respects to the deceased's family.

The compound has been in the spotlight since early this morning, when Syafiq's remains were expected to return from Masjid Tunku Laksamana Abdul Jalil of the Johor police contingent headquarters, before being buried at Batu 8 Gambang Muslim cemetery this afternoon

His parents Ahmad Said Md Piah, 65, and Aini Mohd Shariff, 57, appeared calm when receiving guests, but could occasionally be seen wiping away tears, clearly moved by the loss of Syafiq, the seventh of their eight children.

Meanwhile, the Pahang Menteri Besar's special officer (Islamic affairs) Yunan Abdul Samad, representing Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, was also present to hand over a RM8,000 donation to Said.

Speaking to the press, he said Wan Rosdy expressed his condolences to the deceased's family, and hoped they would persevere in the face of the tribulations over the loss of a loved one.

In the 2.45am incident yesterday, Syafiq his and colleague Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, both 22, died in an attack at the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor.

The duo were attacked by a masked man while another member, Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan sustained injuries after being shot. He is reported to be stable and is being treated at the Sultan Ismail Hospital.

The police confirmed that a 21-year-old male suspect, who was shot dead in the incident, was believed to be a member of Jemaah Islamiyah.
