Selangor passes amendment to increase public service commission’s allowances

By Yasmin Ramlan

SHAH ALAM, Mar 7 — The State Legislative Assembly has passed an amendment to the State Service Commission (Remuneration) Enactment 1959 via a simple voice vote to increase its members’ allowances by between RM500 and RM1,000.

The amendment involves the fixed and interview allowances of the chairman, deputy chairman, and members of the Selangor Public Services Commission.

Under the new rate, the chairman’s fixed allowance is increased from RM3,000 to RM4,000; the deputy chairman's from RM2,300 to RM3,000; and ordinary members from RM2,000 to RM2,500.

Meanwhile, the interview allowance is increased from RM50 to RM100.

Once gazetted, the new rate will take retroactive effect beginning June last year.

Earlier, when tabling the State Service Commission (Remuneration) (Amendment) Bill 2023, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the revision was very appropriate and timely.

This is considering the last time the rates were updated was over a decade ago in 2013.

“The fixed and interview allowances’ revision for commission members is expected to catalyse enhancing the quality of their services,” he said.

Amirudin added that before the amendment, a comparative study was also conducted with the Public Services Commissions of other states on various aspects, including duties, workload, infrastructure, and organisational structure.

It revealed that while the Selangor Public Service Commission is considered on par with the Perak Public Service Commission, its members received lower allowances compared to their Perak counterparts.
