AMPANG JAYA, Feb 29 — KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) has spent RM42.5 million on new vehicles for domestic solid waste collection for two local council areas.

Its managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said RM20 million had been allocated for the purchase of 49 compactor lorries and another RM3.5 million for roll-on-roll-off (Roro) lorries for the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).

"As for the areas under the Ampang Municipal Council (MPAJ), KDEBWM has set aside RM19 million for the purchase of 44 compactor lorries and three Roro bins.

"These new lorries are able to handle a total capacity of 18,000 tonnes of refuse. They will save on fuel costs and are the perfect size to navigate neighbourhoods for garbage collection," said Ramli at the launch event for the lorries and the unveiling of KDEBWM's new image, officiated by state executive councillor for local government Dato’ Ng Suee Lim at the MPAJ Convention Centre in Taman Melawati, here yesterday.

Meanwhile, MPAJ president Dr Ani Ahmad said the compactor and Roro lorries are able to handle some 240 tonnes of garbage in the 47 areas under her jurisdiction.

"They come just in time to replace the older lorries that have broken down and will definitely be able to work with better speed and efficiency," she said.

MPS president Dato’ Mohd Yazid Sairi, meanwhile, said the new vehicles will address the complaints the municipal receives about garbage collection.

"They are surely able to handle the 16,800 tonnes of garbage that Selayang disposes of each month," he said, adding that the 764,000 residents of Selayang will greatly benefit from them.
