Stimulating economy: MPK to develop 10,000 hectares of land as industrial zone

By Zareef Muzammil

KLANG, Dec 21 — The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) is planning to develop a massive 10,000 hectares of land into an industrial zone to meet the high demand of businesses in the district.

Its president Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan said the move is also aimed at stimulating the economy of Klang, ahead of its imminent upgrade to a city status.

She explained that MPK has already made the necessary amendments to its local plans to ensure the realisation of the proposal, and that the council is currently awaiting approval from the state administration.

"We have received numerous applications to increase the number of industrial areas in Klang. God willing, we will get another 10,000 hectares of land for this purpose in the near future.

"This is also crucial in terms of economic development, because we want Klang's economy to remain sustainable moving forward," she said after attending the MPK Sustainable Community Awards 2023 at KSL Esplanade Hotel, here, yesterday.

Noraini also encouraged unlicensed small businesses to register themselves with the local authorities to ensure their continuous growth.

"Take exporting products for example. If they (businesses) want to do this, they require a certificate from the local council. As such, I strongly encourage industry players to come forward and take part in the regularisation programme."

On a separate matter, Noraini noted that MPK has implemented various programmes throughout the year to ensure it achieves the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

These include programmes involving strata communities, car-free days, promotion of community gardens, tree-planting activities, recycling programmes and river cleaning.

"The implementation of SDG 17 (on strengthening partnerships for sustainable development) has given a positive impact when MPK achieved various successes through the cooperation of all quarters.”

Among the achievements, she said, include being nominated as the top five finalists for the best municipal council category, and bagging the Sustainable City Award (Murninets), Smart City Early Adopter Award, and Completion of SDG Roadmap Award.
