Post-mortem: Langkawi lock-up detainee died of pneumonia

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — The post-mortem report of a female detainee who reportedly died in police custody at the Langkawi district police headquarters in Kuah, Kedah, on Saturday (December 16), revealed there were no traces of criminal injuries.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said doctors confirmed the 34-year-old woman's cause of death was due to pneumonia and has been classified as sudden death.

“However, the Criminal Investigation Unit on Deaths in Custody (USJKT) under JIPS Bukit Aman will continue the investigation from various angles before submitting the investigation results to the Coroner,” he said in a statement today.

The woman had earlier been remanded since Tuesday (December 12) at the Kuah police station lock-up, Langkawi district police headquarters (IPD), to assist investigations under Section 39B and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

She then complained about feeling unwell on the night of December 15 and was taken to the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi and warded for treatment while under detention.

However, the woman reportedly died at 7.30am the next morning, and her body was taken to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for an autopsy.
