KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — A Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) offering a long-term solution to address flooding in several locations in Klang is expected to kick off in 2024, said Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

The project, to be carried out by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS), is currently in the procurement phase and is projected to be completed in 2030.

“JPS is working on the RTB of Sungai Klang at Section 25, Shah Alam, and the RTB at Sungai Kapar Kecil and Sungai Kapar Besar, in Klang and Petaling.

“The project’s status is currently in the procurement phase and is scheduled to commence in 2023, with an estimated completion date in 2030,” he said during his winding-up speech at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Nik Nazmi was responding to a question from Klang MP V. Ganabatirau on the flood issues in his constituency.

In June, the minister stated the ministry would immediately implement the RTB as a long-term solution, following flash floods in several locations in Klang, involving Pekan Meru and Bandar Bukit Raja.

Increasing the frequency of maintenance of the drainage system in the district would serve as a short-term solution.

In Budget 2023, the Federal government under Perikatan Nasional allocated RM15 billion for the RTB until 2030 as a long-term climate change adaptation strategy, which includes RM2 billion in funding to construct the dual-function retention pond along the length of Sungai Klang and Sungai Rasau in Selangor.

For Budget 2024 under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, announced on October 13, the Federal administration allocated RM11.8 billion for flood mitigation efforts nationwide, which includes the Sungai Langat RTB Phase Two in Selangor.
