15,208 inspections conducted to curb sugar hoarding

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) conducted 15,208 inspections nationwide through ‘OP Manis’ from May 3 to yesterday (Oct 17) to curb sugar hoarding activities.

KPDN secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said that during this period, the ministry received 433 complaints and recorded a total of 46 cases involving various offences, including selling above the controlled price, packaging sugar without the approval of the Supply Controller, and providing misleading information about sugar prices.

"KPDN will take strict action against any parties found to be involved in sugar supply irregularities, including selling unrefined coarse and fine white sugar subjected to conditions, sugar hoarding activities, and selling above the prescribed controlled price,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Mohd Sayuthi said OP Manis 2.0, extended until Dec 31, will not only ensure there is no sugar hoarding activity by irresponsible parties but will also prevent panic buying by consumers that could disrupt the supply of the commodity in the market.

Members of the public who have information related to misconduct by traders or irregularities in controlled items can file complaints via WhatsApp at 019-279 4317 / 019-848 8000, the KPDN e-Complaint Portal, the KPDN Call Centre at 1-800-886-800, e-mail, or the Ez ADU KPDN smartphone app.
