IPOH, Sept 26 — Sunway Group aims to produce at least 150,000 kilogrammes (kg) of vegetables per year by 2030 through organic farming.

Its founder and chairman, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said the group is addressing food security through its eight-hectare (ha) Organic Farm at Sunway City in Ipoh.

The Sunway Organic Farm produces chemical and pesticide-free fruits and vegetables with fresh water from the mountains and natural springs.

“On a related note, our agri-tech arm, Sunway XFarms, is now operating in Kuala Lumpur city centre’s largest indoor vertical farm.

“This urban farm supplies more than 13,000kgs of fresh vegetables a month to the surrounding urban communities,” he said in his keynote address at the Perak state education community partner organisation hi-tea ceremony, here today.

Cheah said the initiatives are aimed at transforming the agricultural industry in Malaysia into a knowledge-intensive sector with high-income jobs for people.

He added that at Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, the group is developing its township called Nature’s Capital City.

“The township’s natural beauty, such as the seafront facing Singapore across the Johor Straits, the seven-kilometre (km) Pendas River and mangrove forests, are all preserved in their natural habitat, as far as possible, during development.”

Cheah also said Sunway was also planning to open a five-star Banjaran Mangrove resort there, which will sit amidst mangrove forests along the Pendas River.

He also shared that Sunway will be constructing a multi-purpose motor circuit spanning 40ha and comprising a world-class 4.5-km racetrack that will establish Sunway City Iskandar Puteri as the hub of motoring tourism in the region.

In addition, the group will have an equestrian park that is home to 600 horses, complete with supporting amenities such as a horse spa and a clinic.

“With the city being just a five-minute drive away from the Second Link to Singapore, there is enormous potential for significant economic spill-over impact for Johor and Malaysia.”
