KLANG, June 26 — The Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) is developing a centralised labour quarters (CLQ) in Bandar Sultan Suleiman here, at a total cost of RM120 million.

Expected to commence by the end of this year, the 4.35-acre Laman Lestari development project will be able to accommodate 5,712 local and foreign workers in 336 housing units, said PKNS chief executive officer Dato’ Mahmud Abbas.

Mahmud said construction is expected to be completed within three years, and that the project is aimed at fostering a quality and sustainable living environment for migrant workers in the state.

He explained that the development is also meant to address the issue of workers having to reside in scattered apartments in the area because of the present lack of dedicated accommodations.

"The CLQ development will fulfil the needs of industrial workers in this area, who are assets to the industrial development in Selangor," he said at the groundbreaking ceremony held today.

Caretaker Selangor Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari, who also attended the ceremony, announced that workers will be able to rent the space for RM350 monthly.

Each unit will be equipped with three bedrooms, one bathroom, a dedicated dining area, prayer room and open spaces for the workers’ convenience.

The units will come with other basic amenities such as furniture, appliances and lockable wardrobes.

Amirudin said, with the implementation of the CLQ, companies can also ensure the welfare and safety of their employees more effectively.

“Companies can easily monitor their workers, especially in situations where they fail to report for work, are unwell, or encounter any issue," he said.

During the ceremony, Amirudin witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Inter Great Sdn Bhd and PKNS FM Integrated Sdn Bhd for the implementation of the project.
