KBS helps disabled athletes be independent, build careers

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The Youth and Sports Ministry, through the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb), has implemented various courses and seminars to ensure that athletes, especially those with disabilities, are able to be independent and build their careers.

Its deputy minister Adam Adli Abd Halim said that in this effort, Yakeb has entered into smart cooperation with various parties to help the group.

“On July 24 to 28, Yakeb, in collaboration with the National Sports Institute, will organise the Sports Science Course level 2 for former athletes to develop their careers as coaches.

“This course will be attended by 70 former athletes, with 15 of them being former disabled athletes. Yakeb also collaborates with Yayasan Hasanah to organise various skills and entrepreneurship courses.

“It aims to equip former athletes with knowledge and skills so that they are ready to either enter the job market or start their own business,” he said during a question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said this in response to a question posed by Sri Aman MP Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodi on the ministry's plans to look after the welfare and future of veteran athletes, especially Paralympic athletes.

Adam Adli added that through Yakeb's collaboration with DHS Hospitality Academy and open university this year, a total of 50 former athletes, including 20 former athletes with disabilities, were offered to continue their studies in the field of hospitality and tourism management, with full scholarships.

He said Yakeb has also established a partnership with GoCoach, which provides an online coach search, in addition to opening up space for qualified former disabled athletes who are interested in becoming full-time or part-time coaches, to train new talent in schools.
