PETALING JAYA, March 12 — The squatting problem that faced 249 families in Kampung Dato' Harun in PJS 1 for the past 15 years has since been successfully addressed by the state government

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the families, which consisted of settlers, obtained homes through the Skim Smart Sewa scheme, as the result of a win-win solution with the developer.

"They were offered home ownership based on the rent-to-own concept, in which they pay rent for the homes and subsequently take possession of the properties.

"It was very important to resolve the squatter issue that has been prolonged for close to 15 years. It is only recently that we have been able to resolve the matter with cooperation from the developers involved," he said.

Amirudin was speaking to reporters after officiating the Jelajah Kita Selangor Penyayang roadshow programme for the Petaling district, at Padang Permainan MBPJ in Desa Mentari 3, earlier today.

The state government introduced a rent-to-own scheme to ease the burden of low-income earners (B40) in moving towards home ownership in the future.

Formerly known as Skim Smart Sewa Kemudian Beli (2STAY), it was rebranded as Skim Sewa Milik Selangor.

The two-phase scheme covers smart rent with a minimum rental period of between two to five years, and a period of ownership under rent-to-own.

The tenant who purchases the residence receives 30 per cent of the accumulated rental payment, which is utilised as an advance payment. The remaining balance must be paid in instalments.
