LRT disruption: APAD still waiting for report from Prasarana

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 — The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) is still waiting for the report from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd regarding the Ampang Light Rail Transit (LRT) line service disruption incident due to a kinked track alignment near the Bandaraya LRT station, last month.

In a statement today, APAD said it was working with relevant government agencies to identify the actual cause of the incident.

In response to an article published by a portal today, the agency said it had never accused any party of being the cause of the incident.

“The main focus of this agency is the safety of the people who use public transport every day.

“All the decisions made by APAD are for the sake of public safety and it is the government’s priority to regulate the country’s public transport industry,” according to the statement.

APAD, in a statement issued on January 27 had recommended Kuala Lumpur mayor (DBKL) Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah that development and restricted activities in the railway protection zone be suspended immediately following disruption on the Ampang LRT line service.

The recommendation was submitted in accordance with Regulation 8 of P.U.(A) 367 until the actual cause of the disruption is known and all aspects and safety requirements are complied with by the project owner.

Meanwhile, Prasarana, in a separate statement, hopes that everyone would refrain from speculating on the cause of the incident and instead wait for the full report of the investigation which was expected to be completed on February 16.

The company also stressed it has yet to come to any conclusion regarding the cause of the damage and that the investigation was still ongoing.

According to the statement, a committee comprising officials from Prasarana, the Public Works Department, DBKL and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage had been formed to monitor the probe.

“A thorough investigation into the cracked viaduct and pier near the Bandaraya LRT station that has caused disruptions to the LRT service on the Ampang line between the Bandaraya and Masjid Jamek stations, has started on Feb 2 to identify the cause of the damage.

“The investigation will also determine the rectification and recovery action plan that will be taken,” it said, adding the results of the investigation will be presented to the Transport Ministry and APAD.
