MBSA introduces action plan to deal with Shah Alam floods

SHAH ALAM, Dec 9 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has introduced the Shah Alam Flood Action Plan (Sasud) which will be implemented as a short-term plan and in stages to reduce risk of recurring floods.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said MBSA is the first local authority in the country to implement an integrated flood mitigation projects plan.

He also said one of the plan’s directions is to upgrade the main municipal drainage system to a minimum design that can be accommodated for 50 years.

“In addition, MBSA will upgrade the reservoirs so that it can function when there is an extraordinary flood and add surface runoff support structures such as scupper pipes (drainpipes).

“The plan also provides flood mitigations that can support the Drainage and Irrigation Department’s (DID) flood mitigation systems and build an integrated municipal flood forecasting and monitoring system using artificial intelligence (AI),” he said.

Earlier, Izham officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sasud Project at Taman Sri Muda.

Also present were Klang MP V Ganabatirau, Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof and Shah Alam mayor Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid.

In November last year, a total of 633 people from 147 families were affected by floods after several areas in Shah Alam and Klang were flooded due to heavy rain.
