PETALING JAYA, Sept 20 — The Bukit Gasing state constituency's service centre has launched a reusable containers programme as part of its campaign to say no to disposable plastic beverages packaging.

Its state assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran said the initiative is an effort to encourage the wider community to refrain from using plastic beverages packaging, and instead switch to the use of cups or reusable drink containers.

"The widespread use of plastic beverages packaging pollutes the environment and results in widespread littering. To avoid this, we are selling reusable drink containers or tumblers for only RM10 apiece.

"The containers come in two types, namely 600ml and 450ml, to which we have prepared 1,000 units for each type. Those who purchase beverages with these materials will be provided with a RM1 discount," he said.

Rajiv was speaking at the press conference on the programme, at the Section 8 food stalls earlier today.

He added up to eight shops around the Bukit Gasing state constituency are involved in realising the programme's success.

"These outlets serve as partners, making it easier for the community to purchase water containers and no longer use disposable plastic packaging.

"We welcome any restaurants seeking to collaborate in this campaign. They can do so by contacting 03-29359745," Rajiv said.

Meanwhile, the reusable containers programme has been well-received by the proprietors of eateries in Bukit Gasing, who said it is a timely move to educate the public about the negative effects of using disposable plastic packaging

The owner of Kedai Minuman Harun at the Section 8 food stalls, Nurlela Harun, 36, said she wholly supports the programme to encourage the switch from disposable plastic beverages packaging to reusable drink containers, for the sake of the environment.

“The latest trend among customers is to package drinks in large bowls or cups. However, by using these containers, one can save on plastic usage.

"When a customer purchases a beverage container at RM10, they can get a RM1 discount coupon, and the same goes for subsequent purchases," she said to SelangorKini.

Nurlela added she will begin using drink containers as an effort to promote the campaign to her customers.

"In order to make the campaign a success, I will use drink containers and encourage their usage among my family and the wider society," she said.

The eight restaurants and eateries participating in the reusable containers programme include

  • Bake and Brew PJ New Town in Bandar Baru Petaling Jaya
  • Nora’s Cottage Kitchen in PJ New Town
  • Xing Loong Restaurant in Section 17
  • No. 7 Kedai Minuman Harun, at the Section 8 food stalls in PJS 8
  • Ajmeer Curry House in PJ New Town
  • No. 32, Selera Jaya 223 at Medan Selera Jaya
