SHAH ALAM, Sept 8 — Selangor is targeting to be among the top three places in the 20th Malaysia Sukma (Sukma), which will run from September 16 to 24.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said to be in that position, the state is aiming to win at least 40 gold medals, 40 silver, and 45 bronze.
He said that the goal was set based on the current performance of the athletes as well as other external factors that could contribute to the achievement.
“Each competing team is given equal opportunity and we believe we have the capabilities. The Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) has been very conservative and the target set is realistic even though the coaches have estimated that the figure would be higher.
“We don't have any targets (for the categories) but usually, like in the previous tournaments, swimming is still the focus, while athletics, cycling, archery and shooting can also contribute to gold medals,” he said today.
Earlier, Amirudin had launched the flag handover ceremony to the Selangor contingent at the Selangor Youth and Sports Complex, here.
The event also saw the handing over of the letter of appointments to state executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman to lead the Selangor contingent and Deputy State Secretary of Selangor State Government (Management) Mohamad Zahri Samingon as the deputy head of the contingent.
A total of 30 state assemblymen were also appointed as chaperones to the Selangor team.
