Doping: WFM issues stern warning to state associations

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) has issued stern warnings to state associations that they will be blacklisted from the Malaysia Games (Sukma) if they are found to be involved in doping.

2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games national weightlifting team manager Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim said the warning was issued by WFM president Datuk Ayub Rahmat to ensure the incident in Sukma 2018 in Perak, where two athletes tested positive for methylhexanamine, is not repeated at the Sukma Malaysia XX National Sports Council (NSC) 2022.

He said the federation is continuously providing motivation and cooperating with the Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (Adamas) to provide lectures on doping to state associations to ensure the issue does not recur in the future.

“I hope that athletes will maintain their performance and prove that weightlifting is clean from all doping issues in Sukma,” he told reporters after attending the NSC working committee meeting here today.

The former national weightlifter also said that besides assessing athletes’ performances during the Birmingham Commonwealth Games from July 28 to August 8, they will also use Sukma Malaysia XX NSC 2022, which is scheduled to take place from September 16 to 24 in the Klang Valley, as the final selection for the 2023 South East Asian (SEA) Games in Cambodia.

Amirul Hamizan also said that MWF will send the best squad for the SEA Games in Cambodia, and medal winners in the last SEA Games in Hanoi will likely be retained.

He said, however, they still needed to wait for the list of events or categories from the organiser before deciding which athletes they will send to the Games.

The national weightlifting squad won a silver and three bronze medals at the Hanoi SEA Games last May.
