Malaysia tightens security at entry points after MCBA commander shot at

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 25 — Additional security measures have been activated at the country’s entry points after Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) commander Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir was shot at near the Malaysian-Thai border in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Perlis, today.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the government takes the incident seriously and gave assurance of the level of security at national entry points.

“I am grateful he (Nasaruddin) is safe. The incident is being investigated by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),” he said in a statement today.

Saifuddin said firm action would be taken against those involved and stressed that the government would not tolerate any threat to national security.

“I urge all quarters not to speculate and to allow the authorities to conduct a professional investigation,” Saifuddin added.

In the 5.40am incident along the Masjid Al-Muhajirin slip road here, about 1km from the Malaysian-Thai border, a Proton X70 driven by Nasaruddin was shot at by two men on a motorcycle.

Nasaruddin, who was on his way to perform Subuh prayers at the mosque, was unhurt.

Meanwhile, in a statement today, AKPS said the incident hasn’t weakened the agency’s resolve but has instead reinforced its officers’ determination to remain steadfast, courageous and professional in protecting the nation’s borders.

“Every entry point into the country will remain secure, controlled, and sovereign. We will not tolerate any threat to national security, peace, or territorial integrity,” the statement read.

AKPS noted that Bukit Kayu Hitam has faced multiple threats recently and called this morning’s attack a reckless act that will not be tolerated.

The statement added that AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Shuhaily Mohd Zain had visited the Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS Complex this morning to assess the situation, survey security measures, and express full support for front-line personnel.

AKPS also confirmed that Nasaruddin is safe and remains highly motivated to resume his duties.
