GOMBAK, Feb 17 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari is using his salary as the Gombak MP this year to support the redevelopment of surau and religious institutions in his constituency.
He said that since becoming an MP, around RM200,000 has been spent annually on the community through the Gombak community fund.
However, Amirudin said he has taken a slightly different approach this year by directly channeling his MP salary to support religious institution development.
“This year is a bit different. I am allocating my Gombak MP salary, between RM20,000 and RM25,000 per month, to help surau and religious institutions.
“Last month, it was allocated to surau in Hulu Kelang. This month, I am channeling it to the redevelopment of Madrasah Al-Iman, which requires RM1.5 million,” he told reporters during a programme at Madrasah Al-Iman here today.
He said the state is ready to assist the 31-year-old madrasah, which requires redevelopment.
At the same event, Amirudin also presented Ramadan contributions, including prayer mats and dates, to 100 residents of Taman Seri Gombak.
Meanwhile, Madrasah Al-Iman chairman Khairolden Ghani said he was surprised and did not expect the Menteri Besar to announce that he would channel his salary to help fund the redevelopment.
“I feel proud because he is the first Menteri Besar to visit this madrasah since 1995, praying and dining together with the residents.
“The madrasah aims to start redevelopment work by mid or late this year,” he said.
He added that the madrasah has been authorised by the Selangor Wakaf Corporation (PWS) to collect waqf funds and is now working to meet the requirement of 50 per cent of funds collected before construction can begin.
