Six students confirmed with TB in Kota Tinggi

JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 5 — Six school students in Kota Tinggi are confirmed to have contracted tuberculosis (TB), after screening of their close contacts by the Health Ministry (MOH), but Johor executive councillor for education and information Aznan Tamin said the situation is under control.

He added that the students — four boys and two girls — are being treated and closely monitored under quarantine.

He said the authorities haven’t ordered their schools shut as the outbreak is under control.

According to Aznan, the District Health Office (PKD) also went to the schools involved to brief the management on TB prevention.

“Schools must comply with guidelines and instructions issued by the MOH, especially involving cleanliness and the monitoring of students’ health,” said Aznan.

Meanwhile, he advised the public not to spread unverified information about the case as it could cause concern and panic in the community.

He said the Johor government is committed to ensuring the safety, health and welfare of students and school staff, and will work closely with MOH and related agencies to curb the spread of infectious diseases in the state.

Yesterday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad said the cluster was detected on January 25, with 33 positive cases identified from the screening of 804 close contacts as of yesterday.
