SUKMA 2026: Selangor banks on national e-sports players for gold

SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — Selangor holds an advantage in the e-sports event at the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, seeing that the majority of national athletes in the discipline is from the state, said Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi.

He urged the athletes to draw motivation from their experience competing on the world stage, expressing confidence that e-sports would contribute to Selangor’s push for the overall championship.

“If we look at it, most of the national athletes are in our e-sports team, but I don’t want the athletes to be overconfident. We may be good today, but we don’t know about tomorrow, so they must be prepared for any possibility.

“I hope their status as national athletes will not be a burden, but instead serve as an incentive to contribute to Selangor,” he told Media Selangor.

Nizam said two Selangor Red Giants (SRG) players, Muhammad Haqqullah Ahmad Shahrul Zaman (Sekys) and Hazziq Danish (Stormie) will represent the Selangor contingent at the biennial Games.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Qayyum Ariffin Mohd Suhairi (Yums) has been appointed assistant coach as he is above the age limit for athletes.

“In SRG, we have two players who are qualified to compete; Sekys and Stormie. God willing, they will guide the new athletes who will compete alongside them,” Nizam said.

In July 2024, SRG earned Malaysia its first international e-sports title in seven years by beating the Philippines’ AP Bren Sport Falcons 4-3 in the MLBB Mid-Season Cup (MSC).

SRG jungler Sekys was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the MLBB MSC 2024, while the team walked away with the trophy and a US$1 million cash prize.
