SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) intercepted and seized six shipping containers carrying 158 tonnes of illegal e-waste at West Port yesterday.
Its director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the seizures were made following inspections of nine containers during an integrated operation involving various agencies.
The operation was led by AKPS Port Klang commander Datuk Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal.
"Six of the containers were found to have carried goods listed as prohibited imports under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, with five containing e-waste including circuit boards, fuses, industrial fuses, and copper weighing 127,867kg.
“Meanwhile, another container carried copper wires weighing 30,300kg, bringing the total weight of the seized goods to 158,167kg,” he said in a statement today.
He reminded that the import of scheduled waste is prohibited under the Environmental Quality Act.
“AKPS will continue inspections on commercial containers suspected of carrying prohibited waste, while strengthening control and enforcement at the country’s entry points to ensure border sovereignty and national interests are safeguarded."
Last Tuesday, Port Klang AKPS, together with related agencies, detained five containers carrying scheduled e-waste as well as industrial and commercial waste, estimated to weigh 125,037kg.
