State assures Sukma 2026 prep emphasises safety, risk management

SHAH ALAM, Jan 10 — The Selangor government is organising the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 meticulously and with emphasis on safety and risk management, said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said the state administration is considering all factors, including weather, which is why it has scheduled this edition of Sukma in August, before the northeast monsoon season.

“The Sukma Secretariat will maintain communications with state disaster management (authorities) to ensure contingency plans are at the ready, and choose venues that are not in areas at risk of flooding,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said that to ignite a love of sports among youth, the Sukma torch relay will tour areas under all 12 local councils, with the involvement of the Selangor Youth Movement (PeBS).

“This torch relay also aims to unite the community, with the participation of both old and new athletes, ahead of Sukma Selangor 2026,” Najwan told Media Selangor when met at a PeBS appreciation ceremony here last night.

He added that allocations for the Selangor contingent have been raised to RM10 million, which will be fully utilised to develop the potential of new athletes, strengthen training, and improve the state team’s overall performance.

Sukma Selangor 2026 is scheduled for August 15 to 24, with Para Sukma to be held September 5 to 14. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Sepang International Circuit and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Stadium, respectively.

This Sukma edition features 474 events in 37 sports, including seven additional sports like cricket, silambam, and e-sports.

The event will be held across Selangor’s nine districts under the jurisdiction of its 12 local councils, except for track cycling, which will take place at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

The state government has allocated RM100 million for facility upgrades and Sukma preparations.
