SHAH ALAM, Jan 5 — The government will table a Bill to limit the Prime Minister’s term of office to no more than 10 years or two full terms during the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Bill forms part of the Madani government’s ongoing institutional reform agenda.

“Everyone has a term limit; it cannot extend to decades. This applies not only to the Chief Secretary to the Government, but to all.

“If given that period and it can be implemented, after that it is best that we hand over to the next generation,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Department Monthly Assembly and 2026 New Year Address today.

Anwar also announced that a Bill related to the separation of powers between the Public Prosecutor and the Attorney-General will be tabled during this year’s Parliamentary session.

“As for the direction of the upcoming Parliamentary session this year and beyond, the first law we will table is the Bill on the separation of powers between the Public Prosecutor and the Attorney-General.

“The government will also introduce Bills related to freedom of information and the Ombudsman,” he said.

On September 10 last year, the government decided to separate the roles of the Attorney-General and the Public Prosecutor, after the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said presented a model to the Cabinet to separate the positions.

After due consideration, the Cabinet decided to implement the proposal for full separation, whereby both positions will be established separately and on an equal footing in the Federal Constitution.
