Govt saves RM800m from targeted fuel subsidies

SHAH ALAM, Dec 21 — The government has saved around RM800 million from retargeting fuel subsidies through the BUDI Madani RON95 (BUDI95) initiative, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said this was done to ensure fuel subsidies are only enjoyed by Malaysians, and not leaked to the over 3.5 million foreigners (in the country) and smugglers.

“All of (the RM800 million saved) goes back to the people through STR (Rahmah Cash Aid) and SARA (Rahmah Basic Aid), in addition to upgrading clinics and hospitals, repairing roads, and strengthening the nation’s infrastructure,” he said in a Facebook post today.

He said BUDI95 is the first time a targeted fuel subsidy push was implemented, after 20 years of previous administrations talking about it without action.

Under BUDI95, MyKad holders aged 16 and above with a valid driver’s licence are eligible to buy 300 litres of RON95 at RM1.99 per litre, compared with RM2.60 unsubsidised.
