SHAH ALAM, Dec 15 — The state government is hoping for the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672) to be finalised soon to address public cleanliness in Selangor, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.
He said the act is set to be finalised by September 2026 as part of a statewide cleanliness management reform.
“The implementation of Act 672 is important for the systematic uniformity and effectiveness of cleanliness and solid waste collection works statewide,” he told Media Selangor today.
Ng added that waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities have also been identified as long-term solutions to manage waste collection disruptions, especially in inclement weather.
“WTE can help facilitate waste collection schedules, especially when landfill operations are affected by weather. It also more consistently and economically saves on collection time,” he explained.
Ng also said the state government is studying a collaboration with the Public Works Department (JKR) to coordinate cleanliness management in certain public spaces that are beyond local councils’ jurisdictions.
“Local councils are often the target of complaints even though there are areas under JKR’s jurisdiction, so we are looking into coordination,” he said.
Some recommendations include handing over maintenance of certain areas to concessionaires with allocations so operations are more effective.
Ng explained that the state government is planning to expand the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, especially in illegal dumping hotspots.
He said the community plays an important role in this effort by channelling information to local councils or authorities.
“If they see litterbugs, the public can record it and channel it to the complaint system. We will take appropriate action,” Ng said, emphasising the importance of civic education and community involvement.
