AwAS traffic surveillance in 10 new locations next year

SHAH ALAM, Dec 15 — The Automated Awareness Safety System (AwAS) will be installed in 10 new locations nationwide.

The sites were chosen based on road crash data, especially along high-risk routes that see frequent crashes, reported Berita RTM.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said AwAS cameras are not installed to trap drivers, but to improve road safety.

“The government’s priority is safety, and chosen locations are high-risk areas that see frequent crashes, including ‘black spots’,” he told the Dewan Negara.

He added that the data-based approach is important to ensure AwAS is implemented more effectively as a preventive mechanism and not just for enforcement.

The decision to add locations is expected to strengthen the effectiveness of AwAS, in line with government efforts to make roads safer for all users.
