MBPJ launches sustainable development report, strengthening commitment to SDG agenda

SHAH ALAM, Dec 7 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has launched the Voluntary Local Review Study Report, an important document that serves as a key reference for assessing the city’s progress towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the comprehensive report reflects the actual level of SDG implementation in the city, including policy outcomes and challenges that must be addressed.

“This report covers the city profile, baseline assessment, alignment of MBPJ policies, and plans with the SDGs, as well as a performance data analysis for each SDG.

“It also demonstrates MBPJ’s commitment to greater transparency by providing clear data and a decision-making process that is open to the community,” he said.

Zahri was speaking at the launch ceremony for the report and the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Development Roadmap at Laman MBPJ yesterday.

During the event, the council also outlined the roadmap's five immediate priority actions to strengthen the liveable city development agenda.

He said they include urban poverty and economic inequality, environmental pressures, healthcare access, early childhood learning, and matters related to data, governance, and monitoring.

"Through this roadmap, MBPJ will implement several transformational initiatives, including establishing an urban income lab, enhancing affordable housing, developing low-carbon transport, and implementing sustainable financing.

“It will also strengthen collaboration with various sectors through more structured and continuous mechanisms to build a sustainable urban development ecosystem for the future,” Zahri said.
