PUTRAJAYA, Dec 6 — The Energy Commission (ST) today launched a new initiative, the Energy Commission Competency Excellence (ST-ECE), a continuous learning platform aimed at strengthening workforce competencies in the electricity and piped gas industries, in line with technological advancements and the country’s energy transition agenda.

Launched in conjunction with the Rancakkan Madani Bersama Malaysiaku event, the initiative aims to boost the nation’s skilled workforce capacity to meet the projected need for 62,000 competent personnel by 2050, in line with the target of operating up to 70 per cent, or 56GW, of renewable energy (RE) in the energy sector.

ST, in a statement, said the opening ceremony was officiated by the Chief Secretary to the Government and ST chairman Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

The event was also attended by ST chief executive officer Siti Safinah Salleh, senior officials from the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra), accredited institutions, teaching staff, students, competent persons and industry partners.

Shamsul Azri in the same statement said the rapid growth of energy transition technologies requires stronger skilled workforce capabilities, and ST-ECE was established to ensure competency development is done in a structured, inclusive and consistent manner.

The ST-ECE initiative comprises three main modules — the Intensive Pre-Competence Module for candidates preparing for the written exam; the Competence Enhancement Module, which covers legal, standards and technical aspects; and the New Technology Competence Module to ensure skilled workers are equipped to meet rapid advancements in the nation’s energy technologies.

Shamsul Azri also expressed his appreciation to education institutions and educators for their vital role in shaping students’ values and skills, broadening their career prospects and contributing to the nation’s economic development.

He encouraged industry players to explore collaborations with education institutions and regulatory bodies, to help create more career pathways for skilled and competent personnel.

ST-ECE represents a strategic step in supporting Malaysia’s energy transformation, including the aspiration of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, through high-impact training, industry collaboration and the continuous enhancement of the national energy ecosystem.
